SSIP accreditation support for UK contractors and businesses.

BroadSteps helps you prepare the documentation, close the compliance gaps and navigate the process for CHAS, SMAS Worksafe, SafeContractor, Constructionline and PQQ submissions.

What is SSIP?

The Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP) framework is a UK initiative that promotes mutual recognition between health and safety assessment schemes. It gives businesses a consistent, recognised way to demonstrate their health and safety competence to clients and principal contractors.

SSIP membership schemes including CHAS, SMAS Worksafe, SafeContractor and Constructionline, assess contractors and businesses against a core criteria set that covers policy, competence, risk assessment, working arrangements and accident management. Being accredited to one or more of these schemes is increasingly a prerequisite for working with public sector bodies, housing associations, main contractors and larger commercial clients.

BroadSteps does not award or grant SSIP accreditations. We help clients prepare the documentation and evidence required to apply, and support them through the assessment and renewal process.

The Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS) is one of the longest-established and most widely recognised SSIP schemes in the UK. Why accreditation matters for your business.

For contractors operating in the construction, facilities management and public sector supply chains, SSIP accreditation is increasingly a baseline requirement rather than an optional extra. Without it, your organisation may be excluded from tender processes before you've had the opportunity to demonstrate your capabilities.

Beyond procurement, accreditation signals to your clients, workforce and insurers that your organisation takes its health and safety obligations seriously. It provides a framework for continuous improvement and gives management teams confidence that their legal duties are being actively managed.

  • Access more tendering and procurement opportunities
  • Demonstrate competence to clients and principal contractors
  • Build a structured health and safety management framework
  • Reduce insurance risk and support favourable premium negotiations
